A Starfleet Admiral, Janeway was the father of Admiral Kathryn Janeway. He was killed whilst diving under the polar ice cap on Tau Ceti Prime whilst Kathryn was still quite young; she was wracked with grief for a long time afterwards. In 2373 an alien lifeform impersonated Admiral Janeway in an attempt to convince Captain Janeway that she had been killed in a shuttle accident. The attempt failed.1
