A former Starfleet Academy cadet and scientist, Irina abandoned her career and became a follower of Dr Severin in his quest to find the mythical Eden. During her youth she had been romantically involved with Pavel Chekov, but the romance did not last as he viewed her as being too undisciplined and she viewed him as being too inflexible. In 2269 she accompanied Severin when he stole the cruiser Aurora to search for Eden, and was subsequently arrested by Captain Kirk. She helped Severin to disable the Enterprise crew and steal a shuttlecraft to finally reach Eden. She was subsequently recaptured after Severin's death on the highly toxic world. Kirk agreed to release Irina at the nearest starbase.1
