Opaka was leader of the Bajoran religious system in the latter stages of the Cardassian occupation and shortly afterwards. She was considered one of the few people who could have united the Bajoran during the chaos following the Cardassian retreat2; unfortunately she was killed whilst visiting a prison planetoid the Gamma Quadrant shortly after Starfleet took over Deep Space Nine. Opaka was returned to life thanks to a form of nanotechnology, but the devices function were dependant on the planetoid's environment, and so she was forced to remain there.3
