Chief processing engineer on Janus IV, Ed Appel was shocked by the deaths of many of the miners at the hands of a Horta who lived on the planet. Ed was one of the few to see the creature and live, and described it as "big and shaggy". He managed to shoot it with his phaser, without effect.1
