Captain of the USS Equinox, Ransom was stranded in the Delta quadrant some time before Voyager was. He experienced considerable difficulties during his attempts to reach Earth, compounded by the fact that his ship was a small and relatively weak science vessel. Ransom eventually resorted to murdering alien beings after he discovered that a substance in their bodies could boost the performance of warp drive. When Captain Janeway attempted to arrest him for this act Ransom escaped aboard the Equinox.2 He fought a cat-and-mouse game with Voyager for several days before eventually being defeated by Janeway. Ransom himself was killed when the Equinox was destroyed.3
