Stiles was a member of the crew of the NCC 1701 Enterprise when it responded to the Romulan incursion into Federation space in 2266. He had lost several family members in the Earth-Romulan war, and harboured a deep distrust of Romulans. His dislike extended to Spock when it was discovered that Romulans were an offshoot of the Vulcan race, but he managed to overcome this attitude somewhat when Spock saved his life during the crisis.1
