A holographic character who was created as part of one of Data's Sherlock Holmes programs, Moriarti achieved sentience thanks to a mistaken instruction to the computer by Geordi LaForge.2 He stayed in storage for some time whilst the crew researched methods of bringing him fully to life; in 2369 he siezed take control of the Enterprise in order to force the crew to take the project more seriously. Captain Picard was able to trick Moriarty into believing that he had been freed when he was actually still within a simulation of being free.3
