I'm not sure if this episode is supposed to be a reference to the My Lai Massacre, but some of the resemblances are striking, especially the 'just following orders' stance, or the claims that 'it was their fault'. Somehow, I'm not sure whether it was the fact that I could not believe that the writers would ever have main characters involved in something like this, or the fact that they weren't using Starfleet phasers, or whatever; but it never had me convinced. Still, I suppose it shows you just what can go wrong when military operations get mixed up with desperate civilians. On other matters, it was a convincing performance and I hardly remember any blips. Even though I knew all along that the crew must be blameless, they made very convincing PTSD cases. I liked some of the minor touches, especially Paris' television at the beginning (and they did have remote controls in 1956 by the way). It provided a nice way to introduce the main story, and I hope it shows up again at some point. |
