A Simple Investigation |
| Eminiar VII12 |
An inhabited planet located in the NGC 321 star cluster. Eminiar colonised the third planet in their system, Vendikar, some time prior to the mid 18th century. Vendikar eventually turned against Eminiar and a war broke out between the two in 1767. The primary means of fighting was the use of long range transporters to materialise fusion bombs over cities; the destruction was so great that both civilisations were threatened with total destruction. As a result, the two societies entered into an agreement to conduct the war via computers; attacks would be carried out mathematically and casualties registered. Those designated as casualties would them report to disintegration machines for disposal. This allowed the war to continue on an permanently sustainable basis.12 Eminiar was in an important strategic location with regards to the Federation, and in 2217 the USS Valiant was sent to make contact with the planet. Unfortunately an attack was calculated to have destroyed the ship in orbit, and the Eminians were able to overpower and eliminate the crew in response. The Eminians resisted all further outside contact as strongly as possible, but in 2267 the USS Enterprise was sent to force the issue by making contact over and above their wishes. Again an attack registered the ship as a casualty, but Captain Kirk was able to resist all efforts at immolating him and force a breakdown in the system governing the war. Federation Ambassador Fox offered his assistance in negotiating an end to the conflict.12 |

Balance of Terror |
| Romulus34 |
Located in Sector Z-6, Romulus is the capital world of the Romulan Empire and home planet of the Romulan species.34 Romulus was colonised some time after the rise of Surak's philosophy of non-emotionalism on Vulcan in the year 370. Those Vulcans who refused to accept this transition left the planet, founding various settlements on different planets u as they travelled. One group eventually settled on Romulus and founded a new civilisation there.24 The Romulan civilisation has generally been an aggressive one, and in the 22nd century they fought a war with Earth forces. The war eventually ended with the creation of a neutral zone between the two, a volume of space which both sides were forbidden to send any military forces into.34 Over the years some transgressions did occur, but very few Federation personnel had ever actually penetrated to Romulus itself even by the 24th century.36 Admiral Jarok considered Romulus to be more beautiful than any of the hundred plus worlds he had visited in his military career. He was particularly impressed by the the firefalls of Gath Gal'thong, the Apnex Sea, and the valley of Chula.37 In 2368 Federation intelligence located Ambassador Spock on Romulus38, prompting a covert mission by Captain Picard and Lieutenant Commander Data to the planet. Spock had been working on his own initiative to try and work towards the reunification of the Romulan and Vulcan people. Although Data and Picard did help Spock avert a crisis involving a Romulan attempt to invade Vulcan itself, Spock chose to remain behind on Romulus in order to continue working towards a peaceful reunification.39 The planet Remus was located in the same system as Romulus. In 2379 Shinzon murdered the entire Romulan Senate with Thalaron Radiation and requested talks with the Federation. Captain Jean Luc Picard took the Enterprise-E to Romulus itself, the first time a Federation Starship had penetrated the system. The invitation proved to be a trap, but the Enterprise was able to escape.35 Spock did make some progress in his efforts to deepen relations between Romulus and the Federation and in 2387, when the planet was threatened by an exploding star, the Romulans approached him to request Federation assistance. Spock personally piloted the vessel that would attempt to neutralise the exploding star with an injection of red matter, but he was too late. Romulus was destroyed with the loss of the entire population.40 |

This planetoid was located in the Idran system, near the Gamma Quadrant end of the Bajoran wormhole. It was class M, though the inhabited part of the surface was unpleasant by Human standards. An unknown species used the planet as a prison, placing prisoners on the surface and using a network of orbital satellite defences to keep spacecraft from landing. In 2369 a Federation Runabout crashlanded on the planet, and Captain Sisko and his party were briefly stranded there.42 |

This Delta Quadrant world existed in a state of extreme temporal flux as a result of the subspace particle field produced by its tachyon core. The world had Gravimetric readings similar to that of a collapsed dwarf star. It also resembled a quasar in that it had a rate of rotation of approximately fifty eight revolutions per minute. The name was suggested by Naomi Wildman. Her initial suggestion was "The Weird Planet Where Time Moved Very Fast And So Did The People Who Lived There". Seven of Nine suggested a slightly more precise "The Weird Planet Displaced in Time".45 |

Without this control a lot of the surface area would have been an unpleasant swampland ridden with earthquakes.63 Risa is approximately 90 light years from Earth, and was first visited by Humans in 2152 when the NX-01 crew took shore leave there. The planet was considered to be very cosmopolitan at the time, with visitors from many different species.65 Tourism was one of the major industries on Risa, with the Vulcan database listing more than two hundred registered Nuvian masseuses on the planet66 and attractions including subterranean gardens filled with luminescent plants, steam pools65, and a water recreation park.67 In 2135 T'Pol tracked a two Vulcan fugitives to Risa. She killed one, but the other escaped.68 In the 24th century, Commander Riker was very fond of the planet and managed to convince Captain Picard to holiday there.63 Riker met and had a brief romance with a Ktarian woman, Etana Jol, on the planet in 2368, though she subsequently proved to be a covert operative.69 Geordi La Forge was on his way to Risa in 2367 when he was abducted by Romulans.70 Starfleet intelligence believed that Federation Ambassador Krajensky was replaced by a Founder infiltrator whilst visiting Risa in 237171 Worf and Jadzia also vacationed on the planet in 2373, where they encountered the New Essentialist, a small political movement that saw Risa as an example of how decadent the Federation had begun. The New Essentialists briefly seized control of the weather and seismic control systems during the visit.64 In 2375 Grand Nagus Zek and Ishka retired on the planet.72 |

The Vulcans became concerned that the settlement was a military outpost and claimed the planet in 2097, removing the colonists by force. It remained uninhabited until the Andorians landed a small force in 2152, prompting further hostilities. Captain Archer was able to negotiate a cease fire.77 |

Also known as Mira Antilla V, this is the fifth of six planets orbiting the gas giant Mira in the Mira system. One side of Dytallix B permanently faces the sun. Surface temperatures reach 180 degrees on this hemisphere as a result. Mining took place on the planet for the Federation, carried out by the Dytallix mining company. Mining facilities are situated in the temperate zone between the day and night sides of the planet, but by 2364 these were deserted. There are no native inhabitants or life forms on the planet.94 |

Although the surface gave the appearance of an undeveloped world inhabited only by plantlife, beneath the ground were gigantic and highly advanced factories. Sensors could detect the thoughts of those on the surface, determining their innermost desire and then fabricating whatever was necessary for them to live it out. Even perfect simulations of real people could be created for visitors to interact with. The Enterprise crew visited the planet in 2267 for some rest and recreation, believing it to be uninhabited. They were initially perplexed by their experiences there but once the caretaker of the world explained the situation to them, the crew were able to have a highly enjoyable time.302 |

| Ceti Alpha V309 |
Planet where Kirk abandoned Khan in 2267.309 Six months later, Ceti Alpha VI exploded. This caused a shift in the orbit of Ceti Alpha V that changed what had been a somewhat hospitable climate into one almost impossible to survive in; although the atmosphere remained breathable the surface was barren, and subjected to harsh storms. Only one native life form survived the change, a small and deadly eel. Many of Khan's followers would be killed by the creature and the harsh environment. In 2285 the USS Reliant visited the planet, investigating it as part of Project Genesis. Khan and his followers were able to capture the ship and escape the planet for good.19 |

| Veridian III313 |
The third planet in the Veridian system. Veridian II was a Class M world but did not have a sentient native population. Dr Tolian Soren set up his Trilithium weapon here in 2371, intending to use it to destroy the Veridian star and so alter the course of the nexus, allowing him to enter it. The plan succeeded, destroying Veridian II and all the other planets in the system. Fortunately Captain Picard and Admiral Kirk were able to travel back in time and prevent Soren from launching his weapon, moving those events into an alternate timeline. Captain Kirk was killed in the effort, and was buried in a stone cairn on a mountaintop on the planet.
The Enterprise-D engaged in battle with a Klingon Bird of Prey in orbit of Veridian system, leading to the loss of the ship. The saucer section crashlanded on Veridian III. The bulk of the crew survived and were subsequently rescued.313 |

| Ba'ku315 |
An M class planet located in the Briar Patch. The planet had a ring system which was loaded with metaphasic radiation; the effect of this was to grant exceptionally long life to the inhabitants of the planet. It was the site of a Ba'ku settlement of about 600 people who had fled their original home world fearing that their species was on a path to self-destruction. The Ba'ku favoured a simple pastoral lifestyle, eschewing most forms of technology.315 Eventually a group of Ba'ku became dissilusioned with this mode of living and left the planet, with the result that they began to age normally. They dubbed themselves the Son'a. In 2375 the Son'a, in collusion with the Federation, attempted to harvest the ring system of the metaphasic radiation to regain their youth.315 |

A Class M planet, Nibiru was the home world of the Nibirans, a technologically unsophisticated race of humanoids. In 2259 the USS Enterprise was on a mission to survey the planet when they discovered that it threatened with an environmental catastrophe as a result of a gigantic volcano which was near to eruption. As this would have rendered the Nibirans extinct, Captain Kirk chose to intervene to avert the eruption and prevent the disaster.318 Afterwards, Kirk lied about their actions on his report to Starfleet. Spock, however, chose to relate all of the details of their mission. Admiral Marcus responded be relieving Kirk of his command.318 |

| Qo'noS320 |
A Class M planet, Qo’noS - rendered in English as Kronos - is the home world of the Klingon species and capital of the Klingon Empire.320 The planet was first visited by Humans in 2151 when the crew of the NX-01 took the Klingon operative Klaang back to his people.55 The co-ordinates of Qo’noS are 43.89.26.05318, placing it some 4 days away from Earth at Warp 4.5.55 Qo’noS had at least one moon, Praxis, which was a key energy production facility for the Empire during the 23rd century. The Klingons took insufficient safety precautions and over-mined the moon, which resulted in a devastating explosion in 2293. Much of Praxis was destroyed, producing a massive subspace shockwave and severely damaging the planet’s ozone layer and leading to increasing oxygen depletion. The planet was expected to become uninhabitable by 2343320, although apparently some way was found to avert this.321 Captain Picard visited Qo’noS in 2366 as part of Lieutenant Worf’s attempt to clear his family name. Although Worf accepted discommendation in a political deal to protect the Empire from dissolving into civil war, he and Captain Picard returned to the planet in 2367 to clear his name - and did indeed spark a civil war in the process.322 Quark would also visit Qo’noS in 2371 during his brief marriage to the Lady Grilka.323 In the alternate timeline created by Nero, Khan Noonien Singh took refuge on Qo’noS after his attack on Starfleet headquarters. He hid in a deserted province of the planet, knowing Starfleet would find it difficult to pursue him there. Admiral Marcus ordered Captain Kirk to bombard the planet with long range torpedoes from the edge of Klingon space in order to kill Khan. Kirk disobeyed orders and instead took a small ship to the planet and captured him.324 The planet was divided up into various regions. The Ketha lowlands were the birthplace of Chancellor Martok, an area dominated by farmlands.238 Grilka was from the Mekro’vak region. 325 There were also many geographical features of note, including the Lava Caves of No'Mat, the heat of which could produce hallucinogenic effects in Klingons. Worf once experienced a vision of Kahless after spending six days in the caves. 43 The Hamar Mountains were home to Targs whose shoulders were used in the making of var’Hama candles.326 The Sea of Gatan was a body of water in which B’Elanna Torres almost drowned as a child.327 Kang's Summit was a location where Chancellor Martok once hunted Sabre Bear.328 The Kri'stak Volcano, and the nearby Lake of Lusor were also notable. According to legend Kahless forged the first Bat’leth sword by dipping a lock of his own hair into the lava of the volcano and then cooling it in the lake.285 The Skral River was noted in a Klingon drinking song which claimed that it once ran red with blood after a battle.327 Cities on Qo’noS included Qam-Chee, the site of a famous battle in which the Emperor Kahless and Lady Lukara stood against five hundred warriors - and, later on, jumped on one another ‘like a pack of wild voles’, beginning the greatest romance in Klingon history. 329 Quin'lat was another historic city. According to legend a great storm once approached this city; whilst Kahless and others took shelter inside, one Klingon remained to face the storm, determined to make it respect him. The man was killed, and Kahless noted afterwards that his act was more one of foolishness than courage.325 Tong Vey was yet another city at which a famous battle took place. Ten thousand warriors, led by the Emperor Sompek, conquered the city after a long siege. Sompek ordered it burned to the ground and every inhabitant killed. Worf enjoyed playing the part of Sompek in a holosuite recreation of the battle, always ending the simulation by giving the order to raze the city.290 |

The third planet of the C-111 system, Beta III was home to a pre-warp humanoid species. Approximately 6,000 years ago the planet was wracked by civil wars, so much so that a leader named Landru created a highly sophisticated computer system to solve the problem. The computer was capable of "absorbing" a person, radically altering their personality in order to make them dedicated to peaceful coexistence. Unfortunately this had the effect of stifling their natural emotions to such an extent that some form of outlet was needed; the computer solved this by allowing periodic release during "festivals", in which the population was encouraged to run riot. In 2167 the USS Enterprise visited the planet; Captain Kirk determined that the computer, which had also dubbed itself Landru, was stifling the society rather than continuing it. He destroyed the computer, leaving some sociologists to assist the population in forming a society of their own.424 |

| Aldea489 |
The planet Aldea was long thought to by mythical, until it revealed itself to the Enterprise-D in 2364. Prior to this it had been hidden behind a cloaking device and shield system. The Enterprise-D crew were able to reseed the layer, ending the problem. However, for the solution to remain effective the Aldeans were unable to use the shield or cloak any further, leaving Aldea visible to outsiders.489 |
