Plotline :

Voyager encounters a strange region of twisted space which distorts the ships layout. No matter how hard they try, the crew seem unable to avoid an apparently certain doom as space itself collapses in on them. Should they just give up and let it happen?

If the spatial distortion around the ship is ring shaped, why can they not just fly straight up or down and escape it that way?
