Civilization

Series : Enterprise Rating : 3 Random Image
Disc No : 1.2 Episode : 9
First Aired : 14 Nov 2001 Stardate : 31-Jul-51
Director : Mike Vejar Year : 2151
Writers : Michael Sussman, Phyllis Strong Season : 1
Guest Cast :
Charlie Brewer as Alien/Akaali #1Diane DiLascio as Riann
Wade Andrew Williams as Garos
Plotline : Enterprise discovers an M class planet with a pre-industrial civilisation of half a billion people living on it. Things go from interesting to sinister when they detect an antimatter reactor under one of the local cities. Archer takes a team down and must contend with aliens who are poisoning the locals and locals who suspect that Archer is the one responsible.
Moral :
Interference : It's hard to dismiss the urge to fight injustice

YATI : When Trip is picking the lock to the shop door, Archer claims that they have come 78 light years only to engage in breaking and entering. At the end of the episode we find that the date is now 31st July 2151, which puts it 106 days after the date given in "Broken Bow". But Enterprise should take more than double this time to cover 78 light years, even going at the maximum Warp 5 all the way.

Also, having T'Pol just hang hair over her ears strikes me as a pretty poor disguise. Okay so maybe they don't have the plastic surgery tech to give her ears like the locals, but surely some sort of hat would be in order?

Great Moment : Beaming up the antimatter reactor and using it as a mine.
Body Count : Zero in the actual episode, so far as we know; several locals were said to have died as a result of the alien's activities, and several aliens were stunned or otherwise incapacitated. It's possible the alien ship suffered casualties when the reactor blew up.
Factoid : A nice link to TOS here - the Malurians who are poisoning the planet are from the Malurian system which Kirk's Enterprise visited in "The Changeling". Unfortunately for the Malurians, their entire race of four billion people was wiped out by Nomad!

Wade Andrew Williams, who plays Garos in this episode, is no stranger to science fiction. He played Trajis Lo-Tarik in the Voyager episode "One", and has also been in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Charmed, The X Files, and Seven Days.

Quote : "Starfleet could have sent a probe out here, to make maps and take pictures, but they didn't. They sent us, so that we could explore with our own senses." - Archer to T'Pol.
