Deep Space Nine

In 2371 the Military government of Cardassia finally fell to a popular uprising. The Klingon government rapidly became convinced that the Dominion had engineered the revolution in order to allow their agents to gain control of the Cardassians, weakening the forces arrayed against them in the Alpha Quadrant. A large Klingon fleet was dispatched to Deep Space Nine to use the station as a staging area to launch an all out invasion of Cardassian space. Although the Federation refused to support the Klingons planned actions, Chancellor Gowron proceeded with the invasion regardless.

The new civilian government was evacuated from Cardassia, and Captain Sisko agreed to provide sanctuary on Deep Space Nine. However, when the USS Defiant arrived at the Rendezvous point it discovered a group of Klingon ships attacking the Cardassians.1
Although Captain Sisko rescued the Detapa council he was forced to fire on the Klingons, destroying or damaging several ships. The Klingons persued the Defiant back to Deep Space Nine, where they met a large Klingon fleet led by Chancellor Gowron on the Negh'Var. The Klingons demanded the return of the Cardassians, even though tests had now proved that they where not changelings. When Captain Sisko declined, the fleet launched an all-out attack on the station.

The Federation, concerned about the threat of the Dominion, had been upgrading Deep Space Nines weapons systems for some months with the very latest hardware. The station was able to inflict considerable damage on the Klingon fleet, although the Negh'Var did succeed in overcoming the stations shields and landing troops on board. After intense fighting both on and off the station, a Federation taskforce arrived to reinforce the stations defences. Chancellor Gowron, faced with fighting a two-front war against both the Federation and Cardassians, disengaged and retreated.

The aftermath of the battle was months of conflict between the Klingons and the Federation and Cardassians. Although not an all-out war, many ships and lives where lost on all sides. It was only when the Dominion took over the Cardassian government and forced the Klingons to retreat that Captain Sisko was able to convince Chancellor Gowron to reinstate the peace treaty with the Federation.1
