Sen. John McCain, a former Republican presidential nominee and prisoner of war, has died after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer just days before his 82nd birthday.

John Sidney McCain III, 81, was the son and grandson of navy admirals. He was born August 29, 1936. As a naval pilot, he narrowly escaped death in a fire aboard the USS Forrestal in 1967.

Also in 1967, McCain's plane shot down over Hanoi, and he was captured by North Vietnamese troops. He was tortured during more than five years as a prisoner of war.

After resettling in Arizona, McCain ran for Congress in 1982. He was called carpetbagger, but won the U.S. House seat anyway. After two terms, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, succeeding Barry Goldwater.

Not sure how I feel about this. He was a statesman and a hero... but he also never saw a war he didn't like and had a hand in killing hundreds of thousands of civilians.

It says something about today's politics that polls have current Democrats remembering this former Republican more fondly than his party mates while many rank and file R's approve more of Vladimir Putin.

Regardless, R.I.P. A war hero, proving the notion that Trump wouldn't know one when he sees one. He spoke with as much civility as plainness, something more current politicians can learn from. A comparison to the POTUS in that regard, simply doesn't need to be made.

Apparently he very emphatically stated that Trump must not be allowed to attend his funeral. Can't say as I blame him.

I don't know much of him, he first came to my attention during his Presidential run. He came across as a decent guy, and it was nice to see him stand up to his own supporters some. But oh wow, what a running mate he landed himself with. Yikes.

Since then he seemed to be a guy driven by his own principles rather than party, which is cool. But as others have stated, the man seemed to think war should be the default method of solving any international crisis. And a good deal of blood hit the ground in part because of him. I don't think I'd call him evil or anything, as many do. I just think he was wrong a lot.

Anyway, he was at least a thorn in the side of Donny Tinyhands. So good on him for that.

I never agreed with his political opinions, but I was always impressed by his willingness to be one of the few to not let political divisiveness stand in the way of decency. I will never forget when he - during a campaign whistle stop - completely shut down a supporter referring to Obama as an Arab and defended Obama as an honest and decent citizen. You see very little of that class on either side of the aisle.

Yup. He also wanted George Bush Junior and Barack Obama to deliver his eulogies. Those two men defeated him in his runs for president.

That's kind of interesting.

The Trumpanzees will have a field day with that, I bet.

If he never saw a war how does this work:
Also in 1967, McCain's plane shot down over Hanoi, and he was captured by North Vietnamese troops. He was tortured during more than five years as a prisoner of war.

The most prominent moment I've seen of him in politics of late was his dramatic 'thumbs down' to the diet repeal bill the GOP put through the senate in July 2017. https://eu.azcentral.com/story/news/loc ... 116667002/

His politics may not be anywhere even close to mine but I can respect a man who clearly votes with his conscience against the wishes of his wider party. RIP.

If only for that moment, I'll bow my head to him.
