The casual viewer would only know that Chewie is old enough to be adult-sized during the Clone War. A few silver tips or a strewn can of "Just For Wookiees" hair dye would have appealed to that viewer and wouldn't have hurt anyone.

Maybe I misunderstand human facial expressions but, does Harrison Ford look happy-ish? Or at least interested? And why isn't Chewbacca paying attention!

That expression could be either Harrison's... or Han's in regards to the new characters.
