I had no idea those little dogs (Jack Russel Terrier?) could jump out that far. But he's a natural. When I was a kid we had a dog. He had never been out of the property but, one day my half-brother decides to take us, and the dog, to the river. We go hiking upstream and we go crossing the narrow but, 4ft deep part of the river. The dog is a little antsy as we are all on the other side. He wags his tail, whines a little bit, and then just out of nowhere jumps in the river and starts doggy-paddling. The closest this dog got to a river previously was water out of a hose for his twice yearly baths, which he hated. We had to go get him out of the river now because he kept paddling in circles. Guess he liked swimming. I didn't know how he get dry, then he did that body shake thing that produced more water than the Niagara Falls, and then we all smelled like wet dog.

My old dog was, we believe, part retriever judging by the webbing between the toes and body type. He enjoyed swimming - that is, he would willingly get into a pool or pond and stay there - but he was scared to death of the ocean. He loved the beach, but when the ocean water got near him he'd run like he was stung. IDK if it was the scent, the ebb-and-flow of the tides and eave action, or just unexplainable dog neurosis.

Maybe he didn't want to go anywhere near a patch of water he couldn't see the other side of.

I said "dog," right? Being in no recognizable way part greyhound, whippet, Afghan hound, wolfhound, deerhound, or borzhoi, I tend to doubt he could see the other side of a 5-foot-wide puddle.

My old dog Jenny loved the ocean, though she only got to visit it a couple of times. The first time she saw the sea she ran in and started bouncing around like a kid on christmas. Then she set off out for the horizon - apparently set on becoming the first dog to swim to France. We had to ask some guy who had flippers to go get her and bring her back.

I see dogs who love the sea all the time, and not just aquatic breeds - I've seen dachshunds playing in the surf, for Pete's sake. My dog a) had a particular hang-up or neurosis about wave action, and b) was, in certain regards, dumber than a bag of hammers.

I didn't even know who some of the "celebs" were, and some of the ones that I did I didn't get the reference for the scandal.
