Rice

Post by Teaos »

Very interesting idea for a website. It was on the local news tonight.

For every word you get right 10 grains of rice get sent to africa to feed the hungry.

So far I've donated almost 3000 grains.

My vocal score sites on average about 33 and the most I've had it is 39 before it dropped again.

That's strange - how does it work?
I mean how are they able to get the rice by you just choosing the correct words?

It's an interesting concept. We've been sending this around at school. I average 38, can't get above 39 though. I average about 8 right for every 1 wrong.

Everytime you get a word right the page refreshs with a new word and at the bottom are three sponsors. There are about 30 sponsors at the moment. Evertime their logo pops up they ow the company like 1 cent or how ever much 10 grains of rice are. The company Freerice then fowards the sponsorship money onto the UN rice programme.

I would guess a company would sponsor them for like 10,000 dollars and their logo will pop up 100,000 times or something like that.

I tried it once, got up to level 44/380 grains, before my ISP took a crap.

I like this a lot. Fairly addicting and, as a writer, it aids me.

I don't know if it helped me in the sense that a thesaurus would, but it sure seems to justify those three years of Latin I took!

It's a great site. A good friend of mine (hello Kristina :) ) told me about it, and I've had a lot of fun with it.

@Mikey> I also had Latin in high school, in what you from the US and UK would call grades 9 and 10. I also have a Latin course at University. I wasn't very good at it back then (passive conjunctive this, active indicative that... I had better things to do) but it sure helped me now. ;)

Unfortunately, Latin is omitted from most public schooling over here; and the religious schools teach Ecclesiastical Latin if any at all, which is debased from classical Latin in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. I was fortunate though in having it available to me, and it sure helped on my SAT's, which are our standardixed college entrance exams.

We actually have 'years' over here, and they're different to the US grades
And I have never done any latin. I did a little bit of German (was very poor at it) and that was it. I didn't do very well on this, anyway

I had three years of Latin in high school. No clue if it was classical or what.

I translated the 'Friends, Romans, Countrymen' speech from Caesar into Latin for extra credit, IIRC.
