Suggested Rules Modification
Suggested Rules Modification
Guys, I was thinking. As it stands, if we wanted to upgrade a ship significantly, we have to completely redesign the same ship with the new tech, thus creating a mk II version. I was thinking that this really doesn't make much sense. After all, if you wanted to upgrade a Nebula's warp drive, you'd literally have to redesign the same ship, including the shields, weapons, and armor. You'd think that since you already have the plans for the ship, you'd be able to produce a new model quicker.
Thoughts?

Re: Suggested Rules Modification
The reason it cost what it does to improve ships is two fold.
1. Its a much more complicated problem than just tossing a new warp drive onto a ship. Its my assumption that these things are not built with huge excess in terms of power generation so any change is going to have an impact across the whole of the ship. Things like adding armor mean more weight as well, so everything would again be impacted.
2. Its also the primary way you pay for an upgrade, since there is not a direct charge to refit the ships in terms of resources or credits.

Re: Suggested Rules Modification
ya, so while essentially the game functions as you sitting down and designing the exact same ship, in reality you aren't it's just how we charge for the refit. This system also gives you the ability to turn your old ships into this new ship at a high rate of speed, which balances out the whole process in the end.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Re: Suggested Rules Modification
Basically, refitting a ship in trek terms actually requires an enormous outlay of cost. You can't simply shove a new warp drive in because it would unbalance the rest of the ships's carefully tuned energy balance. Same as you can't throw on a massive phaser bank for the same reason. Effectively, you have to completely redesign the ship with all the balances, and interior functions around the new technology.

What would be the thoughts on establishing rules for the hiring of mercinaries?

Re: Suggested Rules Modification
You can hire mercenaries from any power willing to provide them. The Ferengi don't because they are not good at it. Other powers could probably make a nice chunk of change in that field but no one has elected to do so to this point.

Lol, what about from NPCs? Like Nausagin, or Orion, or even Kazon?

Re: Suggested Rules Modification
I don't have a practical problem with this but what you would get would basically be untrained thugs. That is why they would be avaliable. If you dumped them into a delicate situation like peace keeping they are likely to get drunk and play Dom-Jot instead in between terrorizing the locals.Mark wrote:Lol, what about from NPCs? Nausicaans and occupations....nasty.
Re: Suggested Rules Modification
Question. When scouting colonies, how can we discover what each world has for resources? Will just dispatching a ship to that world be good enough?
