Libertarianism as a philosophy is in favour of minimum state involvement, with anarchism as its greatest extreme. Socialism promotes greater state involvement, with communism as its greatest extreme. The two are diametrically opposed.

Government to help the people with social services and maintain equality, libertarian as in personal freedom and decentralization of power. As it states in that entry, the popular American use of the term libertarian isn't the original meaning, and doesn't always apply to the same thing.
