Because I doubt the Hutts did anything to oppose the Empire.

Who says they didn't? Tatooine was under Imperial control, as was Nar Shaada. Other Hutt planets may very well have been too.

The Empire didn't bother to go after them because they were local crime lords, a civilian law enforcement problem. At least that's until the Clone Wars cartoon when the Hutts suddenly became a power that the Republic actually negotiated with.

The Hutts didn't really pose that much of a problem for the Empire in itself. The Hutts were sensible enough not to go picking a fight with the most powerful force in the universe. Instead, the headed smuggling and anti-civilian operations on Nar Shadda, Tatooine and I think Ryloth, although i am not sure. since they didnt openly appose the Imperials, they were not a concern. The various Rebel sects, the Rebel races like the Corellians, Sullustans, Bothans (whose operatives worked for either side IIRC) and Mon calamari; and the search/extermination of force sensitive races were a much higher priority for the empire.

Aye, the Hutts did what seems to come naturally to them, keep below the radar, and turn a profiet. They likely got over looked a lot due to knowing who to brib as well.

I wouldnt put it past them to be on the Empires pay roll either.

Especially if the Rebels were trying to use Hutt controlled planets. I imagine the Empire would be quite happy with using bribes, and other shady tactics to get the Hutt to rat out the rebels.

I can see them getting paid from both sides, and double crossing as it suited them.
