Why is it USS?
It doesn't make sense to me. They're introduced as the federation star ship (insert name) Shouldn't it be FSS name then? I think only Kirk introduced his ship as the United Star/space (he has used both) ship Enterprise. And the USS is so Americanized whereas something like FSS isn't affiliated with any country I know of.

United star systems. It makes sense.
Although it does sound like the USA I cant really blame them since they made the series. I do give them credit though for putting a government in Paris and not America.

What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

1) The series is made in the US.
2) I think it stands for United Star Ship Enterprise. Although the idea of an un-united starship is pretty odd...

@1 The show is placed in a time when the USA doesn't seem to exist. I think the only evidence otherwise is when Kirk says he's from the state of Iowa. If this was the Stargate series that would make sense because it takes place in the USA but there is no USA in Star Trek.Rochey wrote:1) The series is made in the US.

@2 maybe mutinies were common at some point?

You are indeed correct there, from an out of universe perspective I was pointing out that the writers could have been influenced by that.1 The show is placed in a time when the USA doesn't seem to exist. Possible. So would a mutinous ship have to anounce itslef as the Divided Star Ship Enterprise?@2 maybe mutinies were common at some point?

The TOS is fairly indecisive about which organization the Enterprise belongs to, United Earth Space Probe Agency and several other organizations are mentioned, if memory serves. Makes it harder to pin the USS meaning down. Personally, I always chalked the USS up to the fact it is an American series.
