It might seem a bit contrived to make the choice on that basis, but at the same time I think it's important that after 40+ years Star Trek actually has one explicitly gay character. It would be groundbreaking in the way that Uhura was in the 60s.

And, it really would explain the cape.

And a lot of things about Sulu, actually.

Maybe Demora was through a surrogate. Or maybe she was his niece; do we have any canon (from the shows or movies) information that says she's his daughter?

Yes, they did make it clear in Generations that she was his daughter. But she could have easily been through a surrogate.

If done in the 80's or early 90's then sure. Now though it would just be following in the lines of several sitcoms, so it would be cool but not groundbreaking.

I've always been rather annoyed that Trek wussed out on tackling the gay issue. I can forgive TOS for it, simply because such things weren't a major issue back then. However, VOY and ENT in particular have no excuse for failing to even adress the issue. For a show that likes to remind us all that it has a history of being groundbreaking and pushing controversial issues, they've been doing damn all of that since DS9 ended (and even then they didn't tackle much).
Hell, even nBSG has a gay character, for crying out loud.

I agree that 'Trek should have had an openly gay character by now (no, Jadzia kissing Vanessa Williams doesn't count - although it was wonderful to see.) However, at this point it would be better served by just having it be, and not trying to make an issue of it. That boat, as Kendall said, has sailed long ago. I still think making that character Sulu is a bit patronizing.

Hmm, but he ended up with a daughter. Interesting.
Lots of gay folks have kids. I tend to think it's a bit patronizing, having Sulu be gay (probably) because Takei is. It would explain the cape in STIII, though.
Yes indeed. No straight man could wear that cape.

so what topics do you think should be addressed, if a new show emerged?

Unfrtunately, I don't think there's much new ground to break with a 'Trek franchise right now.

that's what I was thinking...but I'm still in the sheltered world of High School, so I thought I'd ask the "big boys"

QFT. Trek it seems has covered pretty much everything it could thats related to it, they could go the grimdark/live journal route of NeoBSG or the civil war that net fans prattle about but that is no more Star Trek than the already mentioned NeoBSG being related to BSG79.
