And as TrekMovie notes, it was apparently tailored to a very broad, and possibly mute-button-pressing audience. :)

Well, it was aired during a sports show.

I thought it was a perfect ad for that audience. Good advertisement, IMO.

So:

KIrk appears to be a drunken fratboy.
The Enterprise fires firebolts (must have picked up a +1 to incendiary on the ice world).
Kirk doubles as a drop trooper in his spare time.

This is either going to be the greatest Trek movie of all time or the shittiest movie ever made.

I'm not really that surprised at him having a drunken barfight.

The arc of the movie seems to be that Kirk is a rebellious kid, always getting into trouble (crashing the car, etc). He meets either Pike or April, I'm not sure, and is challenged to join up and make something of himself. Kirk being who he is accepts the challenge and off we go.

I wonder at the time span of the movie. Kirk's serving on the Enterprise... does he join the academy and then we get a 'four years later' thing? Or is it a cadet posting, like Nog had?

I'm quite surprised actually given his personality in TOS and the movies, he was portrayed as a rather serious officer who had loosened up over time. Gary Mitchell mentions that he was a very serious cadet and instructor.

I'm hoping he isn't a cadet, seems assine to the extreme that he would be in command of a front-line warship without being an actual officer.

Meh, that could be played off well... he tightened up at the academy, and then reverted a bit once he was used to his office.

Agreed on the idea of a command post as a middie, though.

I've heard that they're going to indicate that Sulu is gay, which I think would be awesome.

Hmm, but he ended up with a daughter. Interesting.

Lots of gay folks have kids. I tend to think it's a bit patronizing, having Sulu be gay (probably) because Takei is. It would explain the cape in STIII, though.
