I wonder how Janeway decided what ranks she'd assign the Maquis crew. I can see assigning the ranks of those officers killed that they were replacing, but how did they decide who got what rank.

I'd still rather have Paris as an officer than Kim, Paris at least has a spine.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

And a certain degree of agressivness. Kim just sat on his thumbs and waited for stuff to happen.

That's Sadi - Voyager's original driver, who was killed in their trip to the Delta Quadrant.

Wow! I've never seen any of Season 1 Voyager. I think I'll at least bother with the first episode now :)

EDIT: After having read the Trek wiki, the eyes are adequately explained as she's Betazoid.

She has about five seconds of screentime. That's nowhere near enough to justify watching it.

Especially as the same episode also contains Janeway's biggest fuckup.

It was also the easiest avoided by the writers.

Absolutely - the Kazon ship colliding with the array crippled the self destruct, so why not the displacement wave as well? They could still have had Janeway blow it up if they wanted a pretty explosion, but without the idiocy of stranding her crew a lifetime from home.

After watching Chuck Sonnenberg's reviews of "Encounter at Farpoint" and "Broken Bow", it occurs to me that perhaps Star Trek doesn't have such good luck with pilot episodes.

Or hey, here's a crazy idea; how about the Kazon ship crashing into the Array just blew the whole damn thing up?

Or how about a Romulan operative sneaking a bomb on board at DS9 and exploding as it went into the Badlands?

Would make for a pretty short series. Not that it would necessarily have been a bad thing...
