DITL Battles #1: Stitch V Mark

Post by Sionnach Glic »

Please remember to keep all comentary in the Comment Thread until the match has ended.

"Captain?" The young man at the tactical station called out urgently.

"What is it, Lieutenant?" Captain Mark asked, turning around concernedly.

"Sir, sensors detect a Klingon Bird of Prey approaching us from port, its weapons and shields are both active!"

"Damn." Mark muttered. His first day as captain of the USS Cluster, an old Miranda class vessel, and already things looked bad. "Hail them." He ordered. "And raise shields."

"No response, Sir." The lieutenant replied after a moment. "Maybe th- SHIT! Incoming torpedo!"

"Helm! Hard to port!" Mark called. He felt the ship lurch under him as it swung ponderously around, the torpedo missing them by scant metres.

"Arm weapons!" Mark yelled. "Red alert! All hands, prepare for combat...."

------------------------------------

Right, and we're now kicking off the first battle of the revival of our wargames, with Stitch's currently unnamed BoP pitted against Mark's USS Cluster Miranda.

Both ships start off facing each other 250K KM apart, and so are in phaser range (as a reminder, phaser range is 300K KM).

Your objectives are simple: defeat your enemy through any means neccessary. Due to quantum flux, the warp drives of both vessels are broken, making them incapable of fleeing.

You can either PM me with you orders, or simply post them here. Whichever you prefer.

Also note that this is a combined game/discussion thread. As I'm probably going to be the only one really posting orders/results, captains and non-players can feel free to discuss the progress of the battle here in this thread.

So we're now starting off with the Conn Phase of Turn 1. If both captains could please give me their orders on what movements they want to make, then we can get things going nicely.

Stitch, aboard the IKS Kam'Ragh opts for a more cautious aproach, moving in a casual 10 KM towards Mark's Cluster, making sure to stay above the Federation ship to keep its dorsal sections in its line of fire.

Mark, on the other hand, shows a lot more eagerness for combat than is usual for a Starfleet officer, and guns the engines to full power, closing 85,200 KM towards the Klingons vessel. Strangely, he maneouvers in the exact opposite direction to Stitch, trying to get the Klingon ship's ventral sections in his crosshairs.

The two ships are now just 164,790 KM apart, well within weapons range. Mark is facing up at his opponent's belly, while Stitch is facing down at his enemy's upper areas.

If both captains could PM me their Tac orders.

Sorry about the delay getting all this stuff going, but I've been unwell over the past week or so. Hopefully we can speed things up now.

First off, info on the ships themselves:

USS Cluster - Miranda Refit class - Mark

The ship is broken down into the following sections (important pieces of those sections in brackets):
Forward saucer (2 phaser banks)
Port saucer (2 phaser banks)
Starboard saucer (2 phaser banks)
Central saucer (bridge, main computer)
Starboard engineering hull (1 phaser bank)
Port engineering hull (1 phaser bank)
Central engineering hull (warp core, impulse engines)
Weapons pod (4 torp tubes, 2 fore and 2 aft)
Port nacelle (the nacelle itself, duh)
Starboard nacelle (ditto)

Each section can take 266,635 TJ of damage before being destroyed.

The shields (split into dorsal, ventral, fore, aft, port and starboard) can take 270,000 TJ, meaining each shield "area" (the aforementioned port, starboard, etc) can take only 45,000 TJ before going down.

Speed:
The ship can travel a max of 17,900 KM per turn

Armament:
8* phaser banks, distrubuted along the ship as mentioned earlier. Capable of doing 9,000 TJ of damage.
4 photon torps (2 fore, 2 aft) capable of firing a salvo of 4 per turn, giving a total theoretical damage of 320,000 TJ (each individual torp doing 80K)

IKS Kam'Ragh - D13 BoP - Stitch

Divided into the following sections (important components in brackets):
Head (bridge, torpedo launcher)
Neck (main computer)
Port engineering hull (impulse engine)
Central engineering hull (warp core, cloaking device)
Starboard engineering hull (impulse engine)
Port wing (Disruptor)
Starboard wing (disruptor)

Each section can take a total of 496,570 TJ before being destroyed.

The shields have a total strength of 324,000 TJ, meaning each shield area can take 54,000 TJ before failing

Speed:
The ship can move a max of 58,000 KM per turn

Armament:
2 disruptor cannons, capable of doing 30,000 TJ damage
1 standard photorp launcher, capable of firing 2 torps per salvo, giving a theoretical total of 160,000 TJ

My conclusions:

Although Graham has them fairly close in the strength indices, my money's on the BoP taking this battle. It's faster, more maneuoverable and surprisingly tough. The Miranda, though, is far stronger in terms of raw power, and its size means it has more sections to destroy before the ship finally stops fighting. In addition, the BoP has no aft-firing weapons, giving it a serious blind spot. The only downside about the Miranda's sheer power is that the vast majority of its power is concentrated in one area: the weapons pod. If that were destroyed, the Miranda would be quickly de-clawed.
Still, it should be one interesting fight.

Turn 1 : Tac phase

Mark starts the carnage off by firing his phasers at Stitch's disruptor cannons. He didn't specify which one, so a random roll of the dice reveals his tac officer aimed at the port disruptor. As he specified aiming at a particular part of the ship, he gets slapped with a rather vicious -3 "to hit" penalty, but luckily the range isn't a factor, as he's managed to close to optimal firing distance.
He requires an 8 to hit his target, and promptly rolls a 10. The phasers slam into the D-13's underbelly, knocking the ventral shields down to 45,000 TJ.
In addition, he fires a medium spread of torps at the Klingon ship's "underbelly" (I'm assuming this to mean he's aiming at the Central Engineering Section, given that it's the centre of mass of the ship). He gets a nice +1 "to hit" bonus due to the maximum spread.
Mark watches anxiously as the torps streak towards their target.......and all four impact the Klingon ship! The shields manage to hold off one of the torps, but the rest strike the hull of the vessel. The Central Engineering Section, the Port Engineering Section and the Starboard Engineering section all get hit with one torp each. Because the damage is spread out, it's not enough to fully destroy the sections, but it does knock each section down to 416,570 TJ integrity. In addition, the damage managed to destroy some of the Port Engineering Section's power relays, causing the port impulse engine to lose a small amount of power, knocking the ship's speed down to 48,000 KM per turn.

On the bridge of the Kam'ragh, Stitch dodges an exploding panel and orders all weapons to target the Cluster's weapons pod. Like Mark, he suffers a -3 "to hit" modifier due to the accuracy required for such a hit.
His two disruptors lash out at the Federation vessel, slamming into the dorsal shields and knocking them down to 15,000 TJ. A single torp hit could breach the shields and cause serious damage to the weapons pod. The Kam'ragh's launcher fires out a pair of torps.....and both of them miss, streaking over the Federation vessel and off into space.

Damage Report:
Kam'ragh: Port, Central and Starboard engineering hulls down to 416,570 TJ integrity. Speed down to 48,000 KM temporarily. Ventral shields overloaded and down permanently. Total remaining shield capacity: 270,000 TJ.
Cluster: Total remaining shield capacity: 240,000 TJ.

Conn orders please, gentlemen.

Stitch's conn officer slams the ship into full speed, accelerating straight towards Mark's ship. Also, he rolls the ship so that the Kam'Ragh's dorsal section is facing Mark. Mark's helmsman tries to maneouver to keep the damaged ventral sections in the line of fire, but fails.

Both ships are now facing each other's forward dorsal sections.
Distance: 106,790 KM

Tac orders, please.

Captain Mark starts the hostilities by firing his weapons at the approaching Klingon ship. The lack of specific targetting giving him no targetting penalties.
The phasers slam into the Kam'ragh's forward shields, knocking them down to 36,000 TJ.
Next, four torpedoes flash out of the torpedo pod on a wide spread (+2 to hit). One goes wide, but the others all hit their mark. The first knocks out the forward shields, overloading the generators and allowing 44,000 TJ through to strike the Starboard Wing, knocking the intergrity of that section down to 452,570 TJ and, surprisingly, causing minor damage to the Starboard Disruptor's power conduits, temporarily knocking it out of action. The second strikes the Starboard Engineering section, unimpeded by the shield it knocks the already damaged section down to 336,570 TJ but doing nothing serious. The third strikes the head of the Klingon ship directly. The armour holds up to the blast (again, knocked down to 416,570 TJ) without any further damage being done other than Captain Stitch momentarily losing his ballance.

Stitch retaliates by firing every gun on his ship at the Cluster's torpedo pod. He's inside optimal range, but the specific targetting gives him a -2 bonus.
The disruptors slam into the Cluster's shields, but the protective fields hold....barely.
Next, a pair of torps streak towards the Federation vessel and slam into the ship. The first torp impacts on the barely functioning shield, which manages to hold off 10,000 TJ of damage, but the rest bleeds through to hit the torpedo pod. With the shields down, the second torp slams unimpeded into the torp pod, dealing a further 80,000 TJ of damage to it. In total the section takes 150,000 TJ damage, causing massive damage to the section and knocking the pod's intergrity down to 116,635 TJ. The torpedoes tear massive gashes in the hull, clogging one of the forward torpedo tubes with wreckage and destroying the second forward tube completely. Inside, internal power feeds overload and blow out, causing havoc and confusion as random systems and panels throughout the ship overload and detonate violently as Engineering rushes to prevent the damage spreading to other parts of the ship (the Cluster suffers a -1 penalty to all actions during the next one [1] turn to signify the chaos caused).

Damage Control:
IKS Kam'Ragh:
Engineering teams report that they have still not repaired the fault with the Port Impulse Engine. The speed penalty remains in effect for now.

Damage Report:
IKS Kam'Ragh:
Hull Damage: Hull integrity down to 336,570 on Starboard Engineering. HI down to 416,570 on Head section. HI down to 452,570 TJ on Starboard Wing.
Crits: Starboard Disruptor damaged. Port Engine still faulty.
Shields: Total shield capacity down to 225,000 TJ (56,250 per remaining section). Forward and Ventral shields permanently down.

USS Cluster:
Hull Damage: Torpedo Pod down to 116,635 TJ.
Crits: One [1] Forward Torpedo Tube blocked. Panic and confusion due to internal systems failure (-1 to all actions during the next one [1] turn).
Permanent Damage: One [1] Forward Torpedo Tube destroyed.
Shields: Total shield capacity down to 200,000 TJ (40,000 TJ for each remaining section). Dorsal shields permanently down.

Conn orders, gentlemen.

Conn Phase:
Stitch guns the engines of his ship, charging forward to try to take advantage of Mark's damaged torps. He closes to 58,790 KM. In addition, he tried to angle his ship to keep his functioning dorsal shields between him and Mark's functioning weapons. Unfortunately, his helm officer seems to be high on something, as he does nothing but fly straight ahead (honestly, that was the worst freaking dice roll I've seen in all my years of wargaming).

In respones, Mark pulls a sharp 180 turn, pointing his aft torps at Stitch's unshielded forward sections.

Distance: 58,790 KM.

Tac Orders requested.

Turn 3 - Tac Phase:
Mark's two aft torpdo tubes blast another salvo of four torps on a wide spread towards the Kam'ragh. Two go wide, but the other two streak on course towards the Klingon vessel. In response, Stitch tries an unusual and risky tactic - trying to shoot down the torps with his disruptors. Unfortunately, his shots miss the fast moving targets (-5 penalty due to their size and speed, changed to -3 when you fact in the disruptor's natural +2 modifier), allowing them to hit his ship.
The two torpdoes slam into the head of the ship, unimpeded by the downed forward shields, dealing a massive 160,000 TJ of damage to the ship's head, knocking it down to 256,570 TJ integrity. Through some miracle, no systems on the ship are seriously affected by the damage, though the bridge is starting to look a little less safe to stand in.

In retaliation, Stitch shoots his helmsman and fires his torps at Mark's vessel on a medium spread. Both hit the ship's aft shields. The shield manages to take the power of half of one torpedo before failing, allowing the rest of the damage to bleed through to the Starboard Nacelle, knocking it down to 226,635 TJ integrity. The second torp impacts directly on Central Engineering knocking it down to 186,635 TJ. No serious damage is dealt to the nacelle, but one of the impulse engines is temporarily knocked out of action, halving the ship's speed until it is repaired and giving a -1 penalty to all Conn actions.

Damage Control:
IKS Kam'Ragh:
Engineering teams report that the Port Impulse engine has been repaired. Work is now commencing on the Starboard Disruptor.

USS Cluster:
Repair teams report that the Forward Torpedo Tube is still clogged with debris, and remains unable to fire.
Order has been restored throughout the ship (-1 penalty no longer in effect).

Damage Report:
IKS Kam'Ragh:
Hull Damage: Head section down to 256,570 TJ integrity.
Crits: Starboard Disruptor still out of action.
Shields: Total shield capacity remains at 225,000 TJ (56,250 per remaining section). Forward and Ventral shields permanently down.

USS Cluster:
Hull Damage: Starboard Nacelle down to 226,635 TJ integrity. Central Engineering knocked down to 186,635 TJ integrity.
Crits: Starboard Impulse Engine out of action (speed halved, -1 to all conn actions). Forward Torpedo Tube still out of action.
Shields: Total shield capacity down to 160,000 TJ (40,000 TJ for each remaining section). Dorsal and Aft shields permanently down.

If you'll send me your Conn orders.

Turn 4 - Conn Phase:

Mrk throws his ship hard to port, hoping to put his functioning port shields between him and the Kam'ragh's armament. Unfortunately, Stitch's new helmsman proves to be the superior pilot, and keeps the Bird of Prey firmly centred on Mark's aft. Mark also tries to throw his ship into a series of evasive maneouvers, but the damage to his engine proves to be too much for the ship to handle such moves.

Distance: 58,790 KM.

Tac Orders requested.

Turn 4 - Tac Phase:

Stitch splits his firepower, targetting the Torpedo Pod with his disruptor and the Central Engineering section with his torps. Unfortunately, his disruptor shot misses his target by a few solid kilometres. His two torpdoes, on the other hand, both slam into the ship. One hits its target dead on, slamming into the Central Engineering, but the other goes off its mark and impacts Starboard Engineering. Central Engineering is ablaze as the torpedo penetrates the already crippled hull, knocking the section's integrity down to 106,635, and detonates amidst a mass of equipment, spreading fires throughout the section and inflicting massive casualties on the Engineering crew (-1 permanent penalty to all Damage Control rolls) and even worse.....the second impulse engine is also knocked temporarily offline! The Cluster is now reduced to maneouvering thrusters only, inflicting a -2 penalty to all Conn rolls and reducing speed to 100 KM.
Starboard Engineering is knocked down to 186,635 TJ integrity, but takes no further damage.

"Fire!" Mark yells at his Tac officer, and another salvo of four torpedoes blaze through the smoke and debris pouring out of the ship's aft towards the Klingon ship. Two go wide, but the gods of fate smile upon Mark as the other two hit the exact same target.....the bridge! Luckily for Captain Stitch, a quick-thinking transporter operator spots the incoming torps and beams him into the backup bridge just moments before the entire top half of the D-13's Head section is torn clean off, the bridge crew either incinerated in the blast from the torpedoes or frozen in the depths of space (-1 permanent penalty to all rolls to signify the loss of the officers). The Head section is knocked down to 96,570 integrity, held on to the rest of the ship by a mangled mass of deckplates and power feeds, but through a miracle the forward torpedo launcher survives intact.

Damage Control:
IKS Kam'ragh:
Starboard Disruptor back online.

USS Cluster:
One forward torpedo tube now operational.

Damage Report:
IKS Kam'ragh:
Hull Damage: Head section down to 96,570 integrity.
Crits: Bridge destroyed, -1 to all actions [permanent].

USS Cluster:
Hull Damage: Central Engineering down to 106, 635 TJ integrity, Starboard Engineering down to 186,635 TJ.
Crits: Port and Starboard impulse engines down (speed reduced to 100KM and-2 to all Conn Rolls), Engineering crew dead (-1 to all Damage Control rolls).

Turn 5 - Conn Phase:

Mark's helmsman stabs at the controls for the maneouvering thrusters, which does little but cause the ship to wallow around slightly, but Stitch manages to keep firmly on his tail, though his own attempts to maneouver to keep his unshielded forward section out of Mark's line of fire fails.

Distance: 58,790 KM.

Turn 5 - Tac Phase:

Stitch, fed up with being constantly blasted by torps, aims all weapons on the Torpedo Pod. His disruptors slam into the pod, knocking it down to 86,635 integrity and damaging the targetting arrays (-1 to hit). One torpedo goes wide, but the other hits dead on, knocking the pod down to 6,635 integrity and destroying one of the tubes.

Mark's four torpedoes streak towards Stitch's D-13. Two go wide, but the other two both slam straight into the head of the ship, destroying it entirely in a massive explosion, causing chaos among the crew as the hull is breached and fire rages througout nearby sections (-1 to all actions for the next turn) and destroying the torpedo launcher.

Damage Control:
USS Cluster:
Engineering teams have managed to restore power to the Starboard Impulse Engine (speed increased to 50% max speed, Conn rolls penalty reduced to -1).

Damage Report:
IKS Kam'Ragh:
Hull Damage: Head Section destroyed.
Crits: Torpedo Launcher destroyed (permanent).

USS Cluster:
Hull Damage: Torpedo Pod down to 6,635 TJ integrity.
Crits: One aft torpedo launcher temporarily down.
