when you are in Year 9, you take an exam in English, Maths and Science named the SAT's (i took mine early, as this my school runs an accelerated program). Then you take your GCSE choices. English, maths and science are mandatory, the rest are your choice. I think you take something like 10 GCSE's? I'd need either Graham or Ian's knowledge on that, being teachers pretty close to me. They range through the Humanities (Geog, History, RE, MFL etc.), the Arts (Drama, Performing arts and Art) and the Physical education (PE, B-TEC PE and B-TEC dance).

So it looks like our is losely based on the English one.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Here we have kindergarten at age 5 (generally - it's based more on school year than calendar age, so with my late birthday I started at 4) and then grades 1 through 12. Often, grades k-3 are at one school in a district, 4-6 at a secondary school, 7-8 at a junior high, and 9-12 at high school (or 4-7 at secondary and 8-12 at high school.) There is also commonly available non-mandatory pre-school for ages 3 and 4.

Or in my case, K-5 @ the "elementary school" 7-9 at the "Middle School"V {9th is technically HS and they're working on an addition plan to move them over, we don't have the room currently} and 10-12 at the High School.
