And (perish the thought!) what about special gear for the security officers for special situations/away missions, etc? Even armor/shielding?

Would you seperate ship based security and the guys who do away missions?

Hey, here's a wacky idea: how about we distinguish security from other departments by giving them armour to wear?

No no no Rochey, Armor only works in TOS. You should know that by now. In TNG we have shirts made out of super ion turbo phaser blocking cotton.

Do we really want to see the security guys lugging around armor all the time? Armor would be a good adition to the uniform during intruder alerts and potentially hostile away missions, but other than those and a few other circumstances i'd rather see a traditional uniform just seperated.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

If they're on duty then security has to be prepared for trouble - that means body armour and weapons and standard.

What about possably adapting the Ablative hull armor Voyager brought back to personelle?

You can't compare warship armour to individual body armour. The former can be dense and rigid, while the latter has to be lightweight and flexible.

Well, unless you expect the bad guys to warn you in advance when they're going to attack, having troops wearing armour all the time they're on duty is a good precaution.Do we really want to see the security guys lugging around armor all the time?

Or, a police style riot shield would be REALLY useful in the narrow corradors of a ship.
