Food choices in TOS

Post by Captain Picard's Hair »

Without replicators, they would have to store each item separately, in stasis or in some other way (as discussed in the other thread), and would have to provide appropriate choices for every species on board. Having more species would make this job harder, so there might actually be some rationale for limiting the range of species on a ship (at least in TOS). This would make shore leave especially welcome, but at the same time bring the crew together in the mess.

You know, come to think of it, how much of Enterprise's food supply did the tribbles eat when they got into the food system? At the rate they eat and multiply, that could have quickly become a huge problem!

Enough that I would guess that they would have had to make an priority trip to another starbase or planet to resupply before continuing on their exploration mission.

And who knows, Scotty beaming them all to the Klingon bird of prey may have been tantamount to a death sentence if the Tribbles ate all the Gagh onboard and the Klingons didn't realise until they were in deep space! :o

Yeah, TOS had a more traditional style of food storage.

Did it? In And The Children Shall Lead Nurse Chapel seemed to be employing a type of replicator. I was under the impression that the food the tribbles ate in their ep (Kirk's dinner) was some sort of raw organic matter.

So the replicators in TOS were specialized for food, converting simple proteins and such into specific food. And fabricators elsewhere in the ship constructed inanimate objects (i.e. Nazi uniforms).

And the coffee, somehow I found them recycling their waste into a different form of waste amusing.
