Exactly my earlier question. Could he kill in a proactively defensive or justified situation? Since his abilities at chess, et. al., seem to be well developed, I would imagine that he could foresee the necessity of such an act.

There's another point actually chess makes me think of tactics...Data could have a very strong career in section 31!

He'd be a pretty useless Naval Officer if he couldn't do this. Picard would have to boot him off the bridge in any number of circumstances, he really should be the Chief Engineer anyways based on his observed skills.. On top of his role as exposition man.
