I've got one more for Nelson. I'll try and get it up in the next 90 minutes while I'm stuck at work.

I'll start catching up on Alpha tomorrow :P

I just need to intro my other character. Hard to do, especially with my odd schedule. Give me till Saturday please, if possible.

Sure, I'm in no hurry. I probably won't get a post up till tuesday at the earliest anyway

I'm almost done. Just finishing up, and then have to review it.

Ok, second character intro post up.

I didn't include her reporting to the ship because I wasn't sure how we were gonna handle the CMO.

An NPC doctor I'd suppose, unless anyone wants to create a second character as the Doc.

BTW, I'm working on something in the back of my head, but I need to figure out some numbers.

What would you guys think that Starfleets numbers would be at this point? If they put everything with a gun and warp drive in service that they could get their hands on, including buying ships from outside powers, like the Vulcans or Andorians older ships.

Would you say a total combined number of 100 ships in 2158 would be realistic?

I think you might be on the light side. Remember that the Neptunes and Intrepids were in current builds when the NX was introduced, and I'd guess they didn't stop while NX production was ramping up. They might have slowed down to free up resources for the NX and then the Daedalus, but I'd guess they'd still be in production. Add the fact of "civilian" or UESPA vessels being militarized for the war, and a pretty big jump on Daedalus production, and I think you'd be more in the 200 - 250 range, if not more.

*ahem* Unless, of course, 100 ships suits your storytelling better... in that case, I'd say 100 ships is exactly right. ;)

As many as there needs to be for the purposes of the plot. Just enough that one can reference other ships yet few enough that the hero ship is often the only one in range of whatever is happening. ;)

I'm looking for an overall, realistic idea.

The reason being, I'm assuming that forces will be broken up into "fleets" with each fleet comprising so many ships.

I'd just like to have some numbers in hand before we start posing loss and casualty figures such as "the entire fourth fleet was wiped out! Over a hundred ships were lost!" With out knowing some numbers to reference, it loses some effect.

I think that if you go with something like a modern carrier group, maybe a bit bigger, you'd be safe. A single battle with lost ships numbering in the 50 - 100 range would probably mean Earth folding like a cheap suitcase, but a loss of 15 - 20 ships is suitably dramatic and painful without changing the game. Remember that like a carrier group, that "x ships lost!" number is more than just cap ships, or even more than just warships.

*EDIT* Yeah, a CVBG/CSG is 6 -7 ships plus tenders, etc., right? That sounds about right.

Got ya. I'm gonna suggest we say Earth has ten fleets of 25 ships each. It's a nice and easy number, and the loss of "the 9th fleet" will be a serious blow, but not enough to end the war.

Ok, on too something else....we know that Earth has the following ship classes.

Intrepid Class
Neptune Class
NX Class
Daedalus Class

what else would you say?

Some converted transports/freighters and such?
Older Andorian/Vulcan ships maybe? ( I can't see them giving Earth front line warships while staying "neutral")
Smaller impulse only fighter craft perhaps (actually, that kind of makes sense)

What about Mercs? Would Earth hire Mercs ya think?

Graham has an older Vulcan type being used by Earth as the "Enterprise-class." I doubt Andoria would give over ships.

As to mercs... who? The Nausicaans are more engaged in piracy at this point, and in any event seem pretty antagonistic to Earth. Andorians might, but at this point seem to have conscripted state service and would be seen on their own as allies rather than available as mercenaries. What other condottierri would there be?

Human mercs for one. Tellerite merc maybe. Orion mercs are a possibility (although in Alpha they were employed by the Romulans), Nausicans are a varied group. We see them acting as bodyguards/enforces/pirates mostly, so its not a stretch to see them as mercs for hire. Plus, the Xindi may lend an assist now that they are sort of friendly, the Denobulans aren't exactly pacifists, and I'm sure that some of Vulcan's disaffected High Command personel need to make a living somehow.
