Seriously, Rochey - we scare ourselves, too.
Big Time. So our solutions seems to be since everybody else has a gun, we need to get one too.

I think I actualy understand that mentality now. If I was living in a country where school kids are more heavily armed than the police, I don't think I'd go anywhere without a weapon.

I would. Abroad.

Good point. I'd be booking the next flight to Europe.

I remember this time when I was working security in a casino in Las Vegas, this really nice couple from London came out of the elevator, and the woman came over and asked me "why does everybody in the states carry a gun?", and without missing a beat her husband said "because everybody in the states carries a gun". He and I got a great laugh out of that one, while she looked slightly irked.

It's not entirely endemic. I've lived/studied/worked in areas that would scare the snot out of some of you - yet I never had any inclination to carry a gun. I have some slight interest in getting one for sporting use (at a range, not hunting) but that's it.

As The Clash said in the song "Safe European Home:"

They got the sun and they got the palm tress (where'd you go?)
They got the weed, and they got the taxies (where'd you go?)
Whoa, the harder they come, n' the home of ol' Bluebeat (where'd you go?)
Yes I'd stay and be a tourist but can't take the gun play (where'd you?)
I can't stand nothing dull
I got the high gloss luster
I'll massacre your ass as fast

Two of my friends are police officers and they are armed with 9mm for their work but both own their own M4s that they carry with them. My sisters to be hubby has an MP5 that we shoot off in his back yard alot. All of us were on the shooting team in my boy scout troop back in the day.

Most Americans have weapons of some kind in their homes or on their persons. Its just a part of living over here. We are a nation born and raised by war, if you didn't have a gun... you died. British, French, Natives, if you weren't armed you ended up dead. Now that isn't the case anymore but Americans without wars at home now go around the world to find new ones to kick up.

The hardest thing in the world that I've ever done give up my guns. But a bi-poler wife with suicidal tendancies and three kids just don't mix well with pistols.

That could end very badly but then again guns aren't really needed in Hawaii that I've ever seen.

Other then shooting geckos.

Well, the nenes (Hawai'ian geese) walk around all over, but you're in for a world of sh*t if you harm one.

And those damn mongooses (or is mongeese the correct plural?). Mean little SOBs.

And since I'm not a hunter, no reason to bother those VERY.....LARGE....and....MEAN....wild pigs.

But your right. Everywhere that I've ever lived, Hawaii is the mellowist. All year long only have like six fatal shootings in the whole state. Robbing a bank out here doesn't even require a gun. The fad is walking into the bank and hand the teller a note saying this is a robbery and give over the money. Tellers are required to do so. These clowns don't even make threats anymore. All very polite and proper.
