Conrad is phenomenal - some of his short stories like "Typhoon" approach Heart of Darkness. As far as Crichton, try reading some older things - The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Congo, The Great Train Robbery, - before he began writing expressly for movie adaptation.

And yes, the art of the Aeneid is in its poetry.

I tried readnig one of the Shannarra books, it never stuck with me.

It's dark fantasy, but the writing ability of Anne Bishop (at least in this series) is breathtaking. When I read Queen of the Darkness, I read it cover to cover without setting the book down.

As far as fantasy stuff, I liked Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, though I got a little bogged down after book 8...

Best ever is Stephen King's Dark Tower series, IMO.

The Night Angel Trilogy was quite good.

And now I can't remember if this was mentioned, but the Swords of Truth series looks to be quite good. I've only read Wizard's First Rule so far, but it was VERY good. And the villain was sooooo creepy AND was blonde haired/blue-eyed. (striking, since I SWEAR that 99.9% of all villains are portrayed as having dark hair and eyes)
