Basic Training can't be shorten, its as short as it can get by the allotment of the Joint Chiefs. What they have done is remove most of the training courses that come after basic. The idea being that troops can be in place within the week the finish basic.

Ah, I understand now. I thought there were only extra courses after basic for specialist troops (snipers, etc).
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: What Would The Other Captains Have Done?
The US uses Basic to "introduce" troops to the equipment and tactics they will need in the field. We have later trainings that teach them how to use it.

Re: What Would The Other Captains Have Done?
So every soldier would go through basic, and then go on and do extra courses after?

Yup, think of it as a grade system.
Grade 1 - Basic
Grade 2 - Advanced Basic
Grade 3 - Specialist training.

Re: What Would The Other Captains Have Done?
I was always under the impression that Bajorans were, on average, physically comparable in strength to humans. That goes for Klingons too, IMO. I always thought they were naturally the same physical strength, but presumably as a warrior culture they probably devoted more time to developing fitness. Recall, Major Kira was able to take out Klingons in "Way of the Warrior." Hell, even Picard could hold his own in "Sins of the Father."Mark wrote:Good point. On a related note, I've often wondered about the relative physical strength and stamina of Bajorans. I've heard it mentioned before that they were slightly physically inferior to humans, but I just didn't see that in the show. Thoughts and observations??
I don't think 'advancing on Iraqi positions' is a very realistic image of how a conflict like the Iraq occupation is attempted. (even without the pogo sticks.)Rochey wrote:Ah, right.
Oh, and what's "jump school"? I'm getting this bizzare mental image of US troops advancing on Iraqi positions on pogo sticks.

I never said it was a realistic image, just the first one that came to mind.

Judging by the canon physiological features mentioned about Klingons, all geared to increasing stamina, damage resistance, etc., I'd say it's safe to assume that they also enjoyed natural greater-than-human average strength.Chris Propst wrote:That goes for Klingons too, IMO. Sorry - I didn't realize it would take a military historian like Seafort to decipher my code.Rochey wrote:I never said it was a realistic image, just the first one that came to mind.

I don't remember the episode, but Worf lifted Bashir by the throat using one hand... Definately not average human strength.Mikey wrote:Judging by the canon physiological features mentioned about Klingons, all geared to increasing stamina, damage resistance, etc., I'd say it's safe to assume that they also enjoyed natural greater-than-human average strength...

And Starfleet officers need the old double fisted punch to do any real damage.

Re: What Would The Other Captains Have Done?
I think it's been canonicaly shown that Klingons are stronger than humans.

The Ferengi might be, though I'm not sure.
