Do that during normal operations and I imagine you'd lose any aircraft that were not tied down over the side. Which would be a worthwhile trade if you're trying to dodge a missile or torpedo.

BTW, maybe it's just the angle of the picture, but does the island (correct term, yes?) on that carrier look very far aft?

It does - I'm guessing that's the angle of the pic along with the list of the ship making an optical illusion.
