How can Monty Python (1969) be referencing Shrek (2001)?Sonic Glitch wrote:I believe it is a reference to Dreamwork's Shrek movie

Forgive the youngun, he's thinking that the idea was referenced first by Shrek, as I guess he's never seen Monty Python....

I've seen something like that in Monty Python, referencing onions and the French. Never understood what was so funny about it.
I still don't understand what's supposed to be the link between French military and onions.
You Brits sometimes have quite the naff sense of humor, mesay.

Not at all, we just collectively harbour a strong dislike for the french. A joke about the french is funny to us regardless of whether its actually a good joke or not.
Come on, a 1000 years racial history of constant bickering, warring and competing with one another isn't going to remove itself from our culture over 50/100 years of cooperation at absolute most.

The logic is very simple. All French men ride bikes and carry onions, as per the picture. Thus the army do too.SolkaTruesilver wrote:Thanks.IanKennedy wrote:SolkaTruesilver wrote:What's this thing with onions and the French military?

Its not bigotry, its just that they simply don't want to look like the French. The armed forces of the UK, with as much as I dislike the general population, have a rightfully proud and honorable service. In such they honor their past by taking pride in their personal appearance and changing or dismissing that is very disturbing to them and to their supporters.SolkaTruesilver wrote:You do raise a good point. I don't think he meant that the desire to not look like the French was bigoted - of course it isn't. I think he meant that the "onion" joke was bigoted, however mildly.Deepcrush wrote:Its not bigotry, its just that they simply don't want to look like the French. Besides, onions have nothing to do with it. In order to look like the French military, they'd have to be issued white flags instead of e-tools as standard kit.

Oh please, we still have the English right? They're not quite as good as the French but they're the closest we've got.

No doubt. However, there's still a reason that we're no longer properly called "colonies."Reliant121 wrote:Empire's rise and fall, man. Our's has, and your's will, given time.
