That's an excellent point. Afterwards, any attempt to shoehorn in some character pieces for Janeway ended up feeling contrived and artificial.Captain Picard's Hair wrote:it's a joke around here that Trek runs on "plot power," but one of the foundations of writing is to build strong characters. In this case it's as if the writers didn't treat the Janeway character as a block to build on but almost as a plot device in itself (the "Captain," not "Kathryn Janeway").
On the other hand, we're lucky Neelix never ran out of coffee!

Well, there was that one time that the ship ran out of coffee, and Neelix tried to tell the captain what she could and could not use her replicator rations for.I wish he had, just once. He would have been the first to die.

She was also morose and depressed about her stranding them in the Delta quadrant for a good half an episode.

Yeah, basically - excepting the inevitable but unknown power of plot device - she doomed the entire crew to die alone, friendless and family-less, in a far corner of the galaxy. That's worth about a half-hour of retrospect, right?Tyyr wrote:She was also morose and depressed about her stranding them in the Delta quadrant for a good half an episode.

Yes, but lets never mention it again or have her act like it affected her.

How many Minbari does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

Graham is biting his tongue on this one. But I'm with everyone: Inconsistency. Though in general I found her so prickly and bitchy when she didn't get her way. I understand not every captain had to be likeable, but she was downright old with people far too often. And not even in the Edward Jellico way.

The condesending got to me more than anything.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.
