As for ST:XI, I predict it will do badly, regardless of how good it is. Trek has long been relegated in public opinion to the status of a show for nerds that would be embarrasing to be seen watching. There's already an existing preconception about it, and many people will avoid it simply because it happens to be Trek.
Are you a glass half empty kind of guy?

(Oh right, you're a super computer, never mind. :D )
Why do you think ENT failed so badly? They attempted to bring the show in a new direction to grab more fans, but the problem was that the people they were aiming to hook never bothered with the show because of their preconceptions, and old fans got fed up with the new direction.
Excellent point, however, I was kind of under the impression that sci-fi is gradually becoming more acceptable, because of shows like Neo-BSG and such.

Excellent.

I'd have thought the same as Rochey, but non-Trekkie friends have seemed interested because of the eye candy and the cheese-free TOS substitute nature of the film.

My father mentioned last night that he'll go see it (him and mom are big TOS fans) and I plan on seeing it, though I will stick to my original rental/bargin bin plan even if TOS is basically the only Trek I like. A friend is interested but highly sceptical cause it's a time travel plot.

Maybe Abrams is trying too hard?
I'm sure he is. The future of the franchise probably rests on the success of film. I am hoping the film will succeed.

Strangely, since I would NOT have imagined any of my friends wanting to see it, quite a few are curious about it and really want to see it. Who would have thought Star Trek would be as popular as Screamo with friends, eh? 8)

As popular as what, now? Help an old man out... you kids with your clothes, and your hair, and your rock 'n roll music...

Apparently it's a genre.

Hmmm. Wiki calls it a post-punk genre, but the names they all list are about as punk as my late grandmother.

Don't you know? Everything, and I mean everything, is made cooler if you put "post-" or "meta-" before it.

I'd like some meta-tacos. :)
