Any Trek is better than no Trek right?
Personaly I'd rather have no Trek than another Enterprise.

Reviving a show is acceptable.
Carrying its bloodied, decomposing remains on your shoulders while running around screaming "IT LIIIIIIIIIVES!!!!" is not, and I'm pretty sure there're laws against that sort of behaviour anyway.

So I gather this isn't just standard Hollywood procedure, signing for more films up front or something?

I thought I read somewhere most actors sign on for sequels just in case or something. I have no idea where I saw that now. :?

Well from the beginning all the main cast have had options in their contracts for 2 sequels, which I think is pretty unremarkable, but Paramount has also started to go forward with a script deal, which is an additional show of confidence. Still nothing final yet, but if the movie does well, then I think we should expect one or two more, sorta like The Dark Knight.

My understanding is most movies have a sequel written in where possilbe.

Wait, you have a problem with this concept?

Perhaps I misinterpreted your stance on the subject of capitalism.

Given that his dot on the political spectrum chart was nearly falling off the edge, I doubt it.

But its very short sighted of them.

Look what happened in the 90's, they flooded the market with trek trying to whore out as much stuff as possible out of it.

If they had been smarter they would have toned it down, made higher quality stuff and had it around far longer.

A better investment.

I don't know that you can make that assessment in this case, though, until you see both the quality and commercial success of the XI.

Look at the "X-Men" franchise. They've been pumping out sequels (with at least another on in production currently) as fast as they can around Jackman's schedule - ostensibly to keep riding the big money wave - yet the quality has remained consistent.

True, but that's the exception rather than the rule. Let's be honest, just how many films have had good sequals made?
Aliens was perhaps even better than the original, but look how far down the quality chart they were.

Personally, I thought X3 was crap, but hey.

Aliens was a good shoot-em-up, but in no way matched Alien in terms of drama. The first was a thriller; the second, an action flick.

Aye, hence the "perhaps" bit. They were completely different genres, but they were both excellent in their respective corners.
The two that came after, however, were pure shit. Personaly I like to pretend Alien: Ressurection never happened.
