Kevin Smith speaks

Post by Graham Kennedy »

A 20 minute youtube clip of Kevin Smith talking about his experiences trying to write a Superman movie. This had me literally crying with laughter.

Go New Jersey!

Seriously he has a store in Red Bank, approximately 20 minutes from my house, and it's awesome. Comics, his movie stuff, "Buddy Jesus" dolls, etc.

I think it's also a valuable window into why a lot of Hollywood movies suck.

A major Producer who's take on a new Superman movie was "Three things I need from the script. I don't want to see him in the suit. I don't want to see him fly. And in the third act I want to see him battling a giant spider, because spiders are the fiercest killers in the insect kingdom." And who wanted a "Chewbacca-type robot, because that had robots on Star Wars and we need to sell some toys off this thing."

This is how movies get made today. It's clear that an awful lot of the most powerful people in Hollywood have absolutely no idea what makes a movie good, so they basically pick whatever weird random crap they think of and whatever random thing they happen to notice in a film with big box office, and insist it has to be in there.

Unlike that movie would've been.

I went to school near Van Nuys, the porn industry's Hollywood. It's a suburb of LA, and near Hollywood. Ah Hollywood. I never knew ye. Thank god for that. It was kinda cool to be down there for a while, but I never saw anyone famous, and it was hot EVERY DAY. Plus, I felt somehow responsible for all the stupid movies that come outta there. At just about every theater there would be a guy outside handing out free tickets to a pre-screening of an upcoming movie. I never went to one.

On another unrelated note, has anyone seen the new Woody Allen Movie, Vicky Christina Barcelona It was pretty good, and there was a certain scene involving Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johanson... Also, Javier Bardem was really great in that movie. I gotta get some romance advice from that guy!

What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.
