Actually being American seems mostly to be about not being something else. I think immegrants will only be a big problem in America if they fail to assimilate over time (like 4 generations). Not sure how well manage into the future. But historically we've been like a slow Borg, the grandparents resistance is futile.

The British have a problem in that you've got a more specific cultural identity that can be lost and also that your immegrants have strong ethnic AND religious differences and show resistance to assimilation.
