Highlander syndrome
OK, here's a something new. Movies that there should have been only one of. For example:
Highlander - The first one was great. Quite different and fun. The sequels are amongst the worst films I've ever seen. The irony in this one is the first film keeps telling you that "there can be only one", but they didn't listen.
Sometimes franchises manage to get further before they implode. Notably, Alien and Aliens, two completely different movies in style, both great. What followed not so much.
I'm sure there are lots more?

Jaws comes immediately to mind.

Starship Troopers
The first one is good. The others that followed it is some of worse films I have ever seen even if it was a TV movie.

That huge beetle that shot plasma from its butt made me laugh so hard.
A friend tracked down the toy from the film years later as a gift to remember how much fun it was to be the only gals in the theater full of fellas, and howling at that scene.

Re: Highlander syndrome
Although I'm not as down on the sequels as others, part of me does wish there was only the first Matrix.
Re: Highlander syndrome
Same with the Matrix.
Between bad CGI in the first and what to me seems like depowering of Neo it just felt off. I know that there is still discussions on what Neo really is. A virus, a glitch, or even the human element coming through. Or that it wasn't entirely clear on what Smith was either.

Re: Highlander syndrome
it's actually pretty easy for me to pretend there's only one Jurassic park. I've never seen any of the others.
one that came to mind is Rambo. The first one was... necessary. It got a lot of stuff out in the open and opened up the opportunities for dialogue about veterans post-Vietnam. That final speech by Rambo at the end? It's... pretty powerful, IMHO. But after? Good fucking LORD way to miss the point of the first movie!

Re: Highlander syndrome
I didn't mind Jurassic Park II to be honest. After that it goes pair shaped.
Tremors is one of those great low budget, slightly cheesy, tongue in cheek movies that is really great. It hits the spot really well. The follow ones don't manage to bring that magic back.
Another one for the list is Lake Placid. The sequels are so poor I stopped watching after 15mins.
The Mummy (1999, Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz etc) I think also belongs on the list. The first is great from start to finish. It does exactly what it says on the tin, a romp of a movie. The second one, tried to be a kids film by bringing the child in. The third is also awful. Graham and I saw the trailer for the first one and both said "We have got to see that film" and for once it turned out perfectly.

Or to quote Conan himself concerning them, "To hell with you!"
