I felt the same way way about "The Exorcist." I eventually watched it and found myself enjoying it. It felt like a drama rather than what we know today as the Horror genre.

Yeah, "The Exorcist" sort of falls under that drama/suspense/creepy horror that "The Shining" captures too, being quite far removed from modern slasher horror. Though when I say "worked up the courage" didn't so much have to do with the concept of horror, just that it is such an oddball mix of sci-fi, satire, Pink Floyd-ian dystopia.
