Rule Britannia would get my vote, too.

Of course I'm aware of both points, but the fact of its ubiquity remains.IanKennedy wrote:A couple of points:
1) We got there first
2) There's a reason for the similarity (as in we used to "own" them)
Even worse, and even less American in origin.Captain Seafort wrote:Why don't you go back to your original one.
To be fair, at the time of George III, the monarchical government was more German than English.Captain Seafort wrote:It's also the old German national anthem,
I can't stand nothing dull
I got the high gloss luster
I'll massacre your ass as fast
as Bull offed Custer

Re: England to get a national anthem?
Are there a lot of songs to choose from? In the US we sing about ourselves alot whether it be pro American, anti American, or this thing where do where we have songs with anti/cynical/critical lyrics, but an uptempo chorus so some people treat them as being positive towards America.

Anyway I'm curious if England sings about itself much and in what manner.
I can see the appeal of Rule Brittania, but I've been to the Roman fort in Chester, so it seems like it isn't quite accurate. Unless "again" is implied or something.

A few points:
1) The Romans left in about 4AD as they had other pressing matters to attend to back home.
2) Rule Britannia dates from 1740, so isn't exactly contemporaneous with the Romans.
3) I will not <> I've have never been

In the context of the song the Britons will never be slaves and never fall to a tyrant bits were sung by angles as your island rose from the sea. I suppose the lyrics are inherently fanciful and so there may be enough room for artistic license to ignore historical nits.IanKennedy wrote: 1) The Romans left in about 4AD as they had other pressing matters to attend to back home.

I had a hard time imagining you and Graham singing those lyrics, but perhaps you can enjoy them ironically.
