Different paths

Post by Meste17 »

So let's say that history went down a different path, and the Enterprise wasn't exactly made as a NAVY vessel as such, but a different type of military unit (such as a starfighter unit, like in Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica), or an Army or Marine/Air Force unit (such as SG-1 from the titular Stargate movie and subsequent tv show or Rough neck 2-0 from Starship Troopers), I wonder what exactly what their designation would be?

No one knows what you are talking about.

You are talking about the designation? It would be whatever you make up.

Just like chances are there might be a Battlestar Enterprise or a Star Destroyer Enterprise. Giving them a designation is up to you.

I see nothing that would mean it was taken a different path.

Honestly, this shouldn't even be a question. You might as well ask what would be the designation of Gumdrop in Star Wars and what Battle Group would Battlestar Carrier would be in.

The real Enterprise (at least the one that made Picard's wall) was an aircraft carrier.

If you're asking if it wasn't any sort of ship at all but just a smaller military unit of pure combatants, then it wouldn't be Trek at all.

Exactly. If it was a Battlestar Enterprise then it would be a Battlestar Enterprise show. If it was a Star Destroyer Enterprise it would be a Star Wars show.

Trying to figure out your line of thought here.

But what Im saying is, say the Enterprise wasn't a Federation starship, but rather a different branch of the military.

Say the 1701st Marine Battalion or the 1701st fighter squadron.

If that were the case, it sounds like the designation would be "the 1701st Marine Battalion" or the "1701st fighter squadron." I'm not sure I'm seeing the question.

What exactly do you mean by "designation"? Are you talking about the name of the ship? I mean, if that's what you're getting at then it would have whatever name the people in the other historical path gave it, obviously. Which would depend entirely on those people and their history, their sense of appropriate ship names, etc.

Or do you mean what would the type of ship be called? In which case, again, it would entirely depend on what this different path of history was like. To address your examples...

If the Enterprise had been built in Star Wars, it would presumably be a Super Star Destroyer.
If the Enterprise had been built in Battlestar Galactica, it would presumably be a Battlestar.
If the Enterprise had been built in Stargate SG-1, it would presumably be an Earth Battlecruiser.

In either case, you're essentially asking us "If the Enterprise had a different name/type, what would it be?"

How can you really expect anybody to answer that? It's a bizarre question.

Technically in SG-1 O'Neil wanted to name the Prometheus, Enterprise but got shut down.

Yes, but it WAS named after a Naval vessel, the CV-6 and CVN-65.

I simply meant if the Enterprise was instead a fighter squadron, say "the Fighting Falcons, aka VA-1701," as an example, or if the Enterprise was a company of Military soldiers, as the 1701st Battalion or the 1701st Alpha Company.

I used to be part of Delta 3 - 10, or simply the 3rd Chemical Brigade, 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, Delta Company, 1st Platoon.

So if the Enterprise was instead based as a military company unit, or if Kirk was in command of a Battalion of Starfleet Marine soldiers instead of a Federation starship, or instead if he was in command of a Federation Fighter squadron or Fighter Wing instead, had Starfleet chosen to follow the way of the MACOs instead of following Starfleet's example ....

OK then it would be different. It wouldn't be Star Trek.

Yes, I got that. You're asking "If a television wasn't a television, what would it be?"

Again, I fail to see how anybody could give a response to this.

I still fail to see how the answer isn't already embedded in the question. If you're asking, "What would a spaceship be called if it were an infantry battalion," I think the answer seems to be "an infantry battalion." Is there a trick that I'm missing?
