true the order you read them in doesn't matter really but I was thinking that Consider Phlebas was a more traditional style of SF novel that some would find it an easier way to access the universe.

I'd say Consider Phlebas is the best to start with, since it's got a pretty simple linear plot, unlike some of the others. Thus far I've only actually read CP and Use of Weapons (and part-way through Excession at the moment) - UoW is certainly a far more complex novel, and a lot darker than the other two.
Only two things are infinite - the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the universe: Albert Einstein.
