Bark Exposes Lying Lion at Chinese Zoo

Animal lovers at a Chinese zoo received a shocking disappointment this week when an animal advertised as an African lion was discovered to be a dog in disguise, according to a report in Beijing Youth Daily.

The fraudulent Fido–a large, long-haired Tibetan mastiff–revealed itself when it began barking at zoo customers at People’s Park of Luohe, located in the central province of Henan.

A woman identified by the surname Liu, who had been teaching her son to identify animals by the sounds they make, was one of the first patrons to discover the fake.

“The zoo is absolutely cheating us,” she told the local paper. Liu was charged 15 yuan ($2.70) for her ticket.

Immediate reactions on Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, conveyed further disappointment in the zoo in their attempt to mislead customers.

“This is not funny at all. It’s sad for both the zoo and the animals,” posted a user.

Zoo officials attempted to explain the incident by saying the real lion had been taken to a breeding facility and a zookeeper’s dog was placed inside of its pen temporarily for “safety reasons,” wrote the Daily.

But locals weren’t letting them off the hook so easy, especially after further inquiry uncovered more misidentified animals inside of the zoo: two coypu rodents in a snake’s cage, a white fox in a leopard’s den, and yet another dog in a wolf’s pen.
I just don't know anymore...

I have been wanting a Tibetan Mastiff along with an English Mastiff for a long time.

I can sort of see it if they kept the dog far far away. But really the face does not resemble a lion.

The Chinese go crazy for Tibetan Mastiffs.
And now, the prized red Tibetan mastiff, thought to be one of the world’s oldest and most venerable breeds, has another distinction: One of the massive, fluffy dogs has become the most expensive dog ever sold.

An 11-month old pup named Big Splash (“Hong Dong” in Chinese) recently sold in the Chinese city of Qingdao for 10 million yuan — about $1.5 million in U.S. dollars.

What kind of bass-ackwards zoo is that? The place looks a total wreck. Plus, who would be stupid enough to think that that was a lion?

To be fair, they didn't fall for it. Probably because the Tibetan Mastiff is perhaps the most recognizable dog in China.

Speaking of which, they just sold a year old Tibetan Mastiff for 1.5 million dollars in China.

From what I understand about the breed is that they are still wild in the sense that they are not completely domesticated.

They are domesticated, but raised for guard duties. That's why that Tibetan Mastiff is doing a Cujo impression. The photographer is in his territory. It was raised to be a guardian and isn't considered a pet. Part of that guardian duty is having to confront wolves and leopards. It wouldn't bark and charge at its master. Frankly it's like an employee and they're paid in food, water, shelter and occasional hugs. :poke:

In the West, unless we are shepherds ourselves, we would socialize these dogs, introduce them to people and other pets when they are young so they don't become like Cujo up there whenever there is an unfamiliar person/animal in its territory.
