TNG BluRays

Post by Graham Kennedy »

So when the TNG blurays came out, there was a lot of talk about how they were simply restoring them. However, those who follow the site updates will know that there have been occasions when they have tweaked a little here and there. The most notable was when they adjusted the energy beam in Encounter at Farpoint so that it came from the phaser array rather than the Captain's yacht. I liked that one.

But today I saw this Samaritan Snare. Samaritan snare features Starbase 515, which looks like this :

Which is a reuse of the Angel One capital city. Only, on the BluRay it looks like this :

Obviously, they wanted to differentiate the two. And I'm good with that, actually. I've never been one who thought the episodes especially need to be exactly as originally broadcast only in high resolution - I adore the TOS remastered episodes with the updated effects, which I think walked an all but perfect line between respecting the original whilst doing the kind of effects they'd have done in the first place if they had infinite time and money.

But I have to say, this image weirds me out a bit. For one... what the hell are those things on top of the buildings supposed to be? They look like giant televisions! The spiral building I like, too, though it looks a bit weirdly at odds with the rest of the city. I'm surprised they didn't go the whole hog and just render a whole new city for this shot - how hard/expensive could that be? Too much, I guess.

So what do people think of little changes like this? Do you hope to see more of it as time goes on, or are they raping your childhood? And what the hell ARE those things?!

I've never minded TOO much updated special effects/locations. As long as we don't have our own 'Han shot first!' thing, I'm more or less cool.

I love the updates, makes them much more watchable.

It doesn't match exactly (at all), but for some reason the first thing that I thought of while looking at the new building tops was Ro-Man...

But now?
Not so sure anymore...

I'm sticking with my DVD sets for simple economic reasons.

I was one of those idiots that bought the DVDs when they were $100 a season. No way in hell am I buying Blu-ray unless I see something cool in it. Like a expanded Wolf 359 battle scene.

That would be sweet.

That would justify me buying Blu Ray.

TNG didn't show any of Wolf 359. There's nothing to expand on. We didn't see it until DS9.

My point is for me to buy them, I need to see something new not something alittle prettier than before. Buying it for the little stuff does justify me buying it.

I got a top quality TV. Though I guess my PS3 isn't top quality as a Blu Ray player but I could be wrong.

PS3's are consistanylu rated as one of the best BluRay players on the markey. Better even than most other Sony players for some reason. One would think that they would be the same "Sony guts"
