Even aside from the data... the point is that if you never make the attempt for fear of failure, you are guaranteed to never be successful.

Nothing has driven research in that region since America walked away from strategic bombers in the middle of the Cold War. There is no longer a supersonic transport either. What would make you think we would be up to Mach 3 by this point?
