Apollo 18

Postby GrahamKennedy » Mon Feb 21, 2011 12:43 am

I've seen a few little articles about this upcoming movie... it's another of the "found footage" type of films, which is a genre I kinda like. It looks kinda weird and spooky.

The tagline is "there's a reason we never went back to the moon..." The premise is that Apollo 17 wasn't the last landing there, Apollo 18 did go and land on the moon, with one of the astronauts filming extensively throughout the mission. However, they discover Something Nasty waiting for them.

On the one hand, the idea that a moon mission could have been covered up in the 1970s is beyond ludicrous. Tens of thousands of people were involved in an Apollo launch, the idea that one could have been launched in secret is just... but I'm gonna note that down and then forget about it and try and enjoy the movie.

Here's the trailer...

I think it looks cool. It's certainly worth giving a chance.

I hate these "found footage" style films. Its been done to death.

***Grumpy old man rant alert*** (possible spoiler but I'm just guessing)

I'm assuming that in this film some of the crew survive & return to earth. Because it says in the tagline "there's a reason we never went back to the moon..." - so going by that humans never went back to the moon. How was the footage found if the whole crew died?

Because the footage wouldn't have been stranded on the moon even if everyone died. They broadcast the recording back to earth just like they did with the first and every following moon landing, hence why the people of earth didn't have to wait until the Apollo team got home to see Armstrong setting foot on the moon.

In this regard, I'd say it being "found footage" means it was just never released to the public and hidden away in some "secret vault"...until now...dun dun dun!

Fair point, though I'm sure they'll make up some hokum about not being able to contact earth. I'm sure the tension would be ruined by them being in constant contact with a room full of level headed engineers. I can just imagine it now ...
Scared astronaut #1 'we don't know what it was it just moved too fast' ***hiss crackle***

Engineer #1 'see that big grab handle you have beside your head?, rip it off and beat the living shit out of the thing next time it shows its face. Strap the corpse to the rear of the hull & the rest of em should steer clear. Now shut up you big jessy and don't damage my module more than you have to"

Unless they're zombie aliens, then we're in real trouble

I don't know. I;d rather watch the new Conan The Barbarian movie instead.

So... something bad is on the moon when the supposed Apollo 18 mission lands. That means that either:

Something is up there that is anaerobic, can exist for some time with no source of food, yet is mobile enough to threaten the astronauts; or, something is up there that is advanced enough to overcome the lack of atmosphere and food technologically, but somehow didn't detect all the prior Apollo missions. Alrighty, then.

Ghosts, or similar?

Perhaps it's something that has lain dormant after arriving on the moon from elsewhere.

Could be, but I've yet to see a true combination of sci-fi and horror. There's plenty of horror out there that happens to be set in a sci-fi milieu, but ends up not being a sci-fi story.
