(WH40K) Custom Guard Regiments: Arterrax

Post by Aaron »

Tyyr's opened the door for this, so I'll be putting up my custom Guard units as well.

Arterrax

Arterrax is predominantly an ocean world, land being largely confined to the Northern hemisphere in one large continent and a chain of islands. The continent spends the majority of the year locked in winter, temperatures plummet to below -40 and heavy snowfall is common. The short spring and summer is dominated by rain and wet conditions, with the formerly frozen ground now a marshy nightmare.

The the majority of the planet lives in large cities raised on pilings tens of metres above the ground, with smaller settlements and floating towns scattered across the continent and ocean.

The worlds Guard Regiments are specialists in arctic warfare, and consist of light infantry, light armour and a smattering of heavy armour units. Unlike the majority of Imperial worlds, the Regiments are reinforced in the field, the practice of which has allowed some Regiments to have remained in service some 1000 years. Since the world was reclaimed by the Imperium.

Kit: Vehicles

Arterrax Rangers (infantry) and Dragoons (light armour) employ Centaur, Chimera and Conqueror tanks as their standard vehicles, much modified for arctic conditions. Typically fitted with wider tracks, more powerful heater units, snorkels, vox-beacons and fuel fired pre-heaters. Chimera's have there turrets removed and replaced with a ring mounted weapon.

Lancer units (heavy armour) use conventional Leman Russ MBTs as well as variants. With a smattering of Malcador and Macharius heavy tanks, usually grouped into a Heavy Troop.

The Vallhalans apparently reinforce their troops in the field. Cain was always talking about how someone screwed up the paper work and forgot that the 597th was one regiment and not two and kept sending them excess reinforcements and supplies.

Yeah, same with the Vostroyan First Born. I thought he mentioned that the Vahallans normally return every ten years or so for R&R and to fully replace losses as well. I may just delete that bit about the majority of Guard, I'm not sure yet.

It's one of those things that is disjointed in WH40K.

The fluff says Imp Guards regiments get thrown out to fight until they all die. Almost every regiment that gets any kind of detail given to it is reinforced and even makes it back to its home planet eventually.

I just write it off as the 99.999% of regiments that get no detail really are thrown out to fight until they die and the hero regiments we see are the odd few that get reinforced and have a shot at making it home.

Well Kage mentions that if a Regiment does well it might get to colonize a new world but TBH I tend to discount a lot of what he says, being a mental case and all.

Thread title edited to reflect the fact that I intend to flesh out Arterrax units as a whole rather then the one.

And that'd really only work with mixed gender regiments.

I like the grim darkness of the normal explanation but it's... bleh.

I think you could explain this nicely though. The whole reason these regiments are well known and famous is that they get support after they're founded. They've got the gear and the time to get good. Those regiments that get no support are the screaming rabble the IG is often depicted as.
