well my best friend of all time, was lucca, a golden akita, although even at my outlandish 90kg, he still outweighed me

I'm sorta neither. I've been attacked by both dogs and cats with no provocation on my part. Although the dog attacks were a lot scarier...

We do, the Brits tried to change the name during WW1.

I was just stating the more universal name.

Well, it wouldn't have looked good if one of the most popular pets in the country was named after the country we were having a bit of a falling-out with at the time. Same reason the Royal Family changed from Saxe-Coberg-Gotha to Windsor.

As a matter of fact, while my family name is "Wistreich," my father has distant cousins named "Wistrich." That branch of the family emigrated from Poland/Galicia to England at the onset of WWII - the rest of the family that was still there went through Russia and on to California - but British registrars refused to admit a name with the word "reich" contained in it!

Well, they still got in, and later on emigrated to Israel - Robert Wistrich in fact had a chair at Hebrew University. But they were no longer "Wistreichs" from then on.
